Work Pattern
Offshore 28/28 rotation
Reports To
Offshore Vessel Master
Position Overview
The Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO) is responsible for the safe and precise station-keeping of DP-equipped offshore vessels during critical subsea operations. This role is essential for drilling support, pipelay, subsea construction, and IMR campaigns where positional accuracy directly impacts operational safety and project success. Qualified DPOs remain one of the most acutely scarce resources in the offshore maritime workforce.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor DP systems (Kongsberg, Converteam, Marine Technologies) to maintain vessel position and heading during offshore operations
- Execute DP operations in accordance with vessel-specific ASOG (Activity Specific Operating Guidelines) and WSOG (Work Site Operating Guidelines)
- Monitor all DP-related sensors, references, and power plant configurations to ensure system redundancy and integrity
- Communicate effectively with bridge team, client representatives, and subsea personnel during DP-critical operations
- Maintain accurate DP logs, watch reports, and incident records in compliance with IMCA and vessel SMS requirements
- Conduct pre-operation DP checks, FMEA proving trials, and annual DP trials as required
- Assist the Master in passage planning and navigation during transit periods
- Respond promptly and correctly to DP alarms, warnings, and system failures following established contingency procedures
- Support cross-deck operations including ROV launch/recovery, crane lifts, and over-side activities requiring DP precision
- Mentor and assess junior DPOs maintaining DP logbooks toward certification progression
Qualifications
Required
- Education: Deck Officer Certificate of Competency (OOW or higher) from a recognized maritime academy
- Certifications: DP Unlimited Certificate (NI); STCW certificates (including updated refresher); BOSIET/FOET; Valid Offshore Medical; DP Logbook with documented DP hours
- Experience: Minimum 3 years as DPO on DP Class 2 or 3 vessels; proven experience in subsea construction, drill-support, or IMR operations
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in Kongsberg K-Pos and similar DP systems; understanding of power management and thruster configurations; ability to interpret ASOG/WSOG parameters
Preferred
- Experience on deepwater DP vessels (6,000m+ capability)
- Familiarity with SIMOPS and multi-vessel DP operations
- IMCA DP incident investigation training
- Experience with autonomous DP and remote operations concepts
Market Intelligence
$500–$900/day
Shortage Level: Critical
Key Skills Gap: DPOs with DP Unlimited certification AND recent deepwater subsea construction experience; the pipeline from cadet to qualified DPO takes 4–6 years and attrition is high
Regions in Highest Demand: North Sea, West Africa, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Australia
Demand Drivers: Surge in deepwater FPSO installations, offshore wind WTIV/CLV fleet expansion, and subsea tie-back campaigns requiring Class 2/3 DP vessels; retiring cohort of experienced DPOs not being replaced at sufficient rate
