Work Pattern
Onshore + Offshore (during shutdowns)
Reports To
FPSO Operations Manager / Maintenance Manager
Position Overview
The FPSO Shutdown Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing planned shutdowns (turnarounds) on FPSO units, including statutory inspections, maintenance, and modification activities. FPSO shutdowns are uniquely complex due to the combination of process and marine activities, limited accommodation, and the need to coordinate with Class surveyors and multiple contractors. As the global FPSO fleet ages and requires more frequent and complex shutdowns, experienced shutdown coordinators are among the most critically scarce resources in FPSO operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and coordinate FPSO planned shutdowns (turnarounds), including scope definition, scheduling, and resource planning.
- Develop shutdown execution plans, including work scope prioritisation, critical path analysis, and contingency planning.
- Coordinate multiple contractor workforces during shutdown execution, ensuring safe and efficient work management.
- Manage the permit-to-work system during shutdown, including SIMOPS coordination and isolation management.
- Coordinate with Class surveyors and third-party inspectors for statutory inspection requirements during shutdown.
- Plan and manage marine and hull inspection activities (tank entry, hull survey) in parallel with topsides maintenance.
- Track shutdown progress, manage emergent work, and adjust schedules to maintain critical path.
- Ensure all shutdown activities comply with HSE requirements, including gas testing, isolation verification, and emergency response arrangements.
- Manage shutdown cost tracking and reporting against approved budgets.
- Conduct post-shutdown reviews and lessons-learned sessions to improve future shutdown performance.
Qualifications
Required
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering or HND with extensive experience
- Certifications: BOSIET/FOET; Confined Space Entry; NEBOSH Certificate (preferred); CompEx (preferred)
- Experience: 8–12 years in offshore shutdown/turnaround coordination with FPSO-specific shutdown experience
- Technical Skills: Shutdown planning and scheduling (Primavera P6 or equivalent); scope management and prioritisation; contractor coordination; permit-to-work and isolation management; Class survey coordination; SIMOPS management; critical path analysis
Preferred
- Experience with FPSO shutdowns involving concurrent topsides and marine/hull activities
- Involvement in major inspection shutdowns (special survey, 5-yearly tank inspection)
- Knowledge of shutdown management systems and digital planning tools
- Familiarity with reliability-centred maintenance and risk-based inspection for shutdown scope optimisation
Market Intelligence
$900–1,400/day
Shortage Level: Critical
Key Skills Gap: Shutdown coordinators with FPSO-specific experience (dual process + marine); candidates available for intensive shutdown periods; Class survey coordination experience
Regions in Highest Demand: Southeast Asia, North Sea, Middle East, Brazil, West Africa
Demand Drivers: Ageing FPSO fleet requiring more frequent and complex shutdowns, simultaneous shutdown campaigns creating competition for resources, difficulty attracting candidates to intensive shutdown work patterns
