Reports To
Lead Topsides Engineer / Engineering Manager
Position Overview
The FPSO Topsides Engineer is responsible for the structural, layout, and integration design of FPSO topsides modules, managing the complex interface between process equipment, structural steelwork, and the vessel hull. This role requires understanding of both offshore structural engineering and the unique constraints of module-based topsides design for FPSO vessels. As FPSO projects increase in size and complexity, engineers with topsides integration experience are in strong demand.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and engineer FPSO topsides modules, including structural framing, deck layouts, and equipment foundations.
- Develop topsides layout and plot plan optimisation considering process, maintenance access, safety zones, and weight control.
- Manage topsides-hull interface engineering, including stool design, load transfer, and differential movement.
- Perform structural analysis of topsides modules for in-place, transportation, and installation conditions.
- Coordinate multi-discipline design integration across process, piping, electrical, instrumentation, and safety disciplines.
- Develop topsides weight control reports and manage weight management throughout design and fabrication.
- Prepare technical specifications for topsides module fabrication and review contractor deliverables.
- Support module lift engineering and load-out sequencing for fabrication yard operations.
- Review and approve 3D model outputs to ensure design compliance and constructability.
- Coordinate with marine engineers on turret interface, flare tower, and helicopter deck design.
Qualifications
Required
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Structural, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering
- Certifications: Chartered Engineer preferred; BOSIET/FOET for offshore visits
- Experience: 8–12 years in offshore topsides engineering with FPSO-specific experience
- Technical Skills: Topsides structural design and analysis; module layout and 3D design; weight control management; hull-topsides interface engineering; SACS, SESAM, or equivalent structural analysis; fabrication and installation engineering
Preferred
- Experience with large FPSO topsides modules (>10,000 tonnes)
- Involvement in topsides float-over and heavy lift installation
- Knowledge of modular construction strategies and yard fabrication management
- Familiarity with BIM and digital twin for topsides design
Market Intelligence
$900–1,350/day
Shortage Level: High
Key Skills Gap: Topsides engineers with hull-topsides interface experience; weight control specialists; module integration engineers; candidates with both design and fabrication experience
Regions in Highest Demand: Southeast Asia (Singapore/Korea yards), Middle East, Brazil, West Africa
Demand Drivers: Record FPSO construction activity, increasing topsides module size and complexity, competition from LNG and onshore projects for structural engineers
