Reports To
Lead Piping Engineer / Engineering Manager
Position Overview
The Piping Engineer is responsible for the design, stress analysis, and specification of process piping systems for offshore and onshore oil and gas facilities. This role ensures that piping systems are designed safely and efficiently in compliance with applicable codes, supporting both greenfield and brownfield project execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and engineer process piping systems in accordance with ASME B31.3 and client specifications
- Perform piping stress analysis using CAESAR II or equivalent software for critical and high-integrity lines
- Develop piping material specifications and class ratings for various process services
- Prepare and review piping isometric drawings, line lists, and bills of material
- Specify piping components including valves, fittings, flanges, and gaskets per ASME/API standards
- Conduct pipe support design and selection including spring hangers and constant supports
- Support 3D model reviews (PDMS/E3D/SmartPlant 3D) for piping layout and clash detection
- Perform flexibility analysis for high-temperature and cyclic loading piping systems
- Review vendor piping design packages and equipment nozzle loads
- Support construction with piping fabrication isometric issue, as-built updates, and field engineering queries
- Conduct piping design risk assessments and participate in HAZID/HAZOP studies
Qualifications
Required
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Certifications: OPITO BOSIET/FOET for offshore; CSWIP 3.1 advantageous for inspection interface
- Experience: Minimum 5 years in piping engineering within oil and gas, petrochemical, or related industries
- Technical Skills: ASME B31.3/B31.4/B31.8, piping stress analysis (CAESAR II), piping material specification, valve selection and specification, pipe support design, 3D CAD/model review (PDMS/E3D/SP3D), ASME B16.5/B16.9/B16.34
Preferred
- Experience with high-pressure/high-temperature (HP/HT) piping design
- Subsea pipeline and riser piping interface experience
- Knowledge of corrosion-resistant alloys (CRA) and clad piping
- Experience with pipeline piping tie-in design
Market Intelligence
$700–1,050/day
Shortage Level: Moderate
Key Skills Gap: Piping engineers are relatively available, but those with strong stress analysis capability and HP/HT experience are harder to find. Subsea piping and CRA specification knowledge adds a premium.
Regions in Highest Demand: Middle East, Southeast Asia, North Sea, West Africa, India
Demand Drivers: Greenfield project execution, brownfield modification and tie-in work, HP/HT field developments, pipeline and riser projects
