Project Director / VP Subsea
Position Overview
The Project Manager - Subsea is responsible for the end-to-end delivery of subsea field development projects, encompassing subsea production systems, pipelines, flowlines, umbilicals, and subsea processing equipment. This role requires deep subsea technical knowledge combined with strong project management discipline to navigate the complexities of subsea equipment manufacturing, system integration, and offshore installation. The combination of subsea technical depth and project management breadth makes experienced candidates extremely scarce.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage subsea development projects from concept through to first oil, ensuring delivery within approved budget, schedule, and quality parameters.
- Develop and maintain project execution plans, contract strategies, and procurement schedules for subsea equipment with long lead items (trees, manifolds, umbilicals, flowlines).
- Manage subsea EPC and installation contractors, including contract administration, variation orders, and performance management.
- Coordinate with wells, host facility, and operations teams to ensure integrated subsea delivery.
- Drive subsea system integration testing (SIT), factory acceptance testing (FAT), and system commissioning.
- Ensure subsea equipment design compliance with API 17D, API 17A, ISO 13628, and client specifications.
- Manage project risks specific to subsea developments, including long-lead procurement, weather windows, and vessel availability.
- Provide regular project status reporting to stakeholders and governance bodies.
- Lead project change management and configuration control processes.
- Manage interface with subsea operations and integrity teams for smooth handover post first oil.
Qualifications

- Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Subsea, or Petroleum preferred)
- Certifications: PMP or Prince2; BOSIET/FOET; IWCF (preferred)
- Experience: 12–18 years in subsea engineering/project management with at least 5 years in a PM role delivering subsea projects
- Technical Skills: Subsea production system design and delivery; long-lead procurement management; SIT/FAT management; API 17A/17D; subsea installation planning; project controls
Preferred
- Experience with subsea processing (boosting, separation, compression) projects
- Involvement in subsea tie-back projects to existing host facilities
- Knowledge of subsea control systems (electro-hydraulic, all-electric)
- Familiarity with subsea digital twin and remote operations concepts
Market Intelligence
$1,200–1,800/day
Shortage Level: Critical
Key Skills Gap: PMs with deep subsea technical knowledge (not just generic project managers); experience with subsea processing and boosting; SIT/FAT management expertise
Regions in Highest Demand: Brazil, North Sea, West Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia
Demand Drivers: Subsea tie-back development boom, subsea processing/boosting technology adoption, deep-water subsea factory concepts
