Reports To
ICSS Lead / Telecommunications & SCADA Manager
Position Overview
The SCADA Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimization of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems that provide real-time monitoring and control of offshore production and pipeline networks. This role ensures continuous data flow between field devices and onshore operations centers, which is essential for remote operations and production optimization.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, configure, and maintain SCADA systems for offshore platforms, subsea fields, and pipeline networks
- Implement and manage RTU/PLC communications using industry-standard protocols (Modbus TCP/RTU, DNP3, OPC UA/DA)
- Develop and maintain HMI/graphics displays ensuring clear operator visualization of process status
- Perform SCADA system administration including server management, database configuration, and historian setup
- Troubleshoot communication failures between offshore platforms, subsea systems, and onshore control centers
- Support network design and cybersecurity hardening for SCADA communications (firewall rules, VPN, DMZ architecture)
- Conduct periodic SCADA system health checks, performance tuning, and capacity planning
- Implement data integration between SCADA, DCS, and business intelligence platforms
- Develop and execute FAT/SAT procedures for SCADA system upgrades and new installations
- Support the transition to cloud-based or hybrid SCADA architectures where applicable
- Document system architecture, communication maps, and point-to-point wiring diagrams
Qualifications
Required
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Control/Computer Engineering or related discipline
- Certifications: OPITO BOSIET/FOET; CompEx or equivalent for hazardous area work; GICSP (Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional) preferred
- Experience: Minimum 7 years in SCADA systems engineering, with at least 3 years in offshore oil and gas environments
- Technical Skills: SCADA platform expertise (major vendor platforms), RTU configuration, industrial communication protocols, network architecture (TCP/IP, MPLS, satellite), cybersecurity fundamentals for OT, historian systems (OSIsoft PI or equivalent)
Preferred
- GICSP or IEC 62443 certification
- Experience with subsea SCADA and umbilical communication systems
- Cloud computing experience (Azure/AWS for industrial IoT)
- Familiarity with subsea field architecture and multi-phase metering
Market Intelligence
$850–1,200/day
Shortage Level: High
Key Skills Gap: SCADA engineers with both OT domain knowledge and IT/cybersecurity competency. Subsea SCADA experience is particularly scarce.
Regions in Highest Demand: North Sea, Middle East, West Africa, Brazil (pre-salt)
Demand Drivers: Expansion of remote operations centers, subsea tie-back developments requiring extended SCADA reach, increasing cybersecurity threats to OT infrastructure, digital oilfield initiatives
