Aramco Year-Long Offshore Drilling Pause; Indonesia Masela LNG Breaks Ground After 27 Years

Aramco suspends offshore drilling across 8+ rigs for up to 12 months putting 800-1,200 roles at risk, while Indonesia breaks ground on the US$20B Masela LNG project after 27 years of delays with 2,000-3,000 peak workforce expected.

Aramco Year-Long Offshore Drilling Suspension

Saudi Aramco has ordered a year-long suspension of offshore drilling operations across 8+ rig fleets, effective immediately. The pause — described internally as a "strategic recalibration" — puts an estimated 800 to 1,200 offshore roles at risk across drilling, completions, and well services. Contractors including Arabian Drilling, Valaris, and Shelf Drilling are understood to be directly affected. The move signals a significant short-term contraction in the Kingdom's offshore workforce demand.

Key implications:

For talent markets: expect a surge of available offshore drilling professionals in the GCC region through Q4 2026 and Q1 2027, with downward pressure on day rates.

Indonesia US$20B Masela LNG Breaks Ground After 27 Years

Indonesia has formally broken ground on the US$20 billion Masela LNG project in the Arafura Sea, Maluku — 27 years after the Abadi field was first discovered. Operated by Inpex Masela with Pertamina Hulu Mahakam as partner, the project targets first LNG production by 2029 with an estimated peak workforce of 2,000–3,000 personnel during the construction and hook-up phase.

Key implications:

For talent markets: the Masela project creates a major demand pull for deepwater subsea engineers, LNG process specialists, and Indonesian-content-compliant project managers across the 2027–2029 construction window.
